Today I am sharing my interview with Tracy C. Gold author of several picture books and a member of my promotion group, PictureBookGold. Her latest book, CALL YOUR MOTHER, illustrated by Vivian Mineker is a timeless tribute to motherhood at all the stages. Not only is “Call your Mother” excellent advice if you’re lucky enough to have a mom you’re able to call, but it is a beautiful new book. It would make a great Mother’s Day gift and I just ordered it as the perfect gift for someone I love who is a brand new mom.
Tracy is generously offering one lucky winner a coupon for one of her classes – to take the online class of their choice or a free copy of CALL YOUR MOTHER.
What were you like at the age of your target audience?
This actually isn’t a super straightforward question for “Call Your Mother” because while this is a picture book for little kids, it might be more for moms, grandmas, and great grandmas. It celebrates the way we rely on our moms throughout our lives, and how your relationship with your mom changes when you become a mother yourself. The last page has a picture of a baby, mom, and grandma. Great grandma is shown in a framed picture on the wall. So, I’ve sent along a picture of me, my mom, and my grandma when my kiddo was only a few weeks old. You can probably tell from my face that I’m exhausted and have had very little sleep, ha. (What was I like as a brand new mom? EXHAUSTED!) My mom came over to help a lot, even spending the night sometimes even though she only lives 15 minutes away. My grandma was already in her 90s when my daughter was born, so we’d bring her around to visit every week. Sadly, we had to stop doing that when Covid started, and my grandma Lil passed before pandemic restrictions eased. I’m glad we have a few early pictures like this to remind us of all of that intergenerational love!
What inspires you?
Well, my family inspires me! CALL YOUR MOTHER is based on my family relationships, as is my first book, EVERYONE’S SLEEPY BUT THE BABY (remember? Exhausted). My two books with Sourcebooks, TRICK OR TREAT, BUGS TO EAT and HIDE AND SEEK, NUTS TO EAT are inspired more from watching nature—bats I saw fly out from under a bridge at dusk, and the squirrels in my yard. As I go through my day, I often think, “could this be a picture book?”
What’s one thing you hope readers take away from your book?
Well, when my mom first read the text of this manuscript, she said “You’re going to make a lot of grandmas cry with this.” Turns out, from the reviews I’ve seen so far, she’s right! This book is making people cry! But in a good way, mostly. Many people have said they’ve gone and called their mothers immediately after reading, or they’ve thought of the mothers they’ve lost and wished they could call. I think what people are taking away—and what I hope they’ll take away—is that you shouldn’t take your relationships with your loved ones for granted. Make sure they know how much you love them!
What’s next for you?
Well, CALL YOUR FATHER is already written and will come out from Familius in 2026, with the same amazing illustrator, Vivian Mineker! I also have started making on-demand online classes about writing picture books: one about rhyming picture books and one for picture book writing beginners.

Thank you for reading, Kim. Tracy let me know early this morning that she would need a few days before she could read comments or promote this interview. She lives in Baltimore and everyone in the area is reeling from the news of the bridge collapse.
She’ll be happy to see your kind words.

Thank you so much, Kim. I’ve been thinking about my Grandma Lil a lot with this book coming out. So many of us lost loved ones after months of isolation due to the pandemic. I’m glad things are better now!

I thought I had responded so forgive me if this is a duplicate, but thank you so much for the kind words! I’ve been thinking about both of my grandmas, both now passed, a lot after the publication of this book.
