Welcome Author-Illustrator Julie Rowan Zoch

Today I am please to share my interview with Julie Rowan Zoch who has two recent releases. LOUIS, which she illustrated, written by Tom Lichtenheld and I’M A HARE, SO THERE! her author-illustrator debut. I read LOUIS over FaceTime to my daughter and granddaughter and it was a huge hit. We all laughed from beginning to end, and if that’s not an endorsement, I don’t know what is. I’ve only read excerpts of I’M A HARE, SO THERE! but I look forward to getting my hands on it soon. Julie is offering a copy of I’M A HARE, SO THERE! to one lucky winner (US only) so don’t forget to comment on this post to enter the giveaway.

What were you like at the target age of your audience?

I was curious, confident, and luckily a very happy child at that age. I loved school, hated homework, and was probably a bit of a terror for my teachers as I liked to talk. A lot! Not very different from the main character, Jack!

Julie (at about 7yrs old) and her dear Uncle George who recently passed

What inspires you?

I’m pretty easily inspired: from the sound of  burrowing owl babies when they are afraid (do look it up!), the genius of Dvořák, the smell of freshly ground cardamom, or how spring leaves look against a slate gray sky.

What do you hope readers take away from your books?

I would hope that readers feel inspired to read more about animals – or anything in the natural world!

What’s next for you?

No new contract at the moment, so I will readwriteeatsleepdraw, repeat! (Except when I’m at work in the bookstore!)

I'm a reading specialist and award winning educator from Chicago. While living in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado for nine years, I spent time hiking on the trails with my Goldendoodle Charlie and friends, writing, working in a literacy program at the Boulder Public Library, and mentoring writers and teachers. I love visiting schools. My books combine STEM and Kindness. "Aliana Reaches for the Moon" a picture book that draws inspiration from the moon and the curiosity of children, inviting children to be creative, explore, and experiment. "An Accidental Hero: A Mostly True Wombat Story" a picture book told in the form of a newscast which skillfully balances the serious subject of forest fires with compassion and humor to help children navigate this important topic through the real events of 2020. I moved to Northern New Jersey in 2025 and am working on new projects.

  1. I read and adored Louis when it came out and Julie’s art is amazing (the expressions are so much fun). I can’t wait to read her book I’m a Hare, So There.

  2. I’m glad to have another chance at winning this book! It looks like lots of fun. We only have snowshoe hares where I live, so it would be interesting to learn about their desert-dwelling cousins.

    1. Thank you so much for reading and I agree completely! Everything about this book is so inviting. If you haven’t read LOUIS, also illustrated by Julie, it’s a new favorite of ours. Thanks again for checking out my blog – 2 giveaways each week on Tuesdays and Saturdays. Good luck in the giveaway.
