I’m excited to share my interview with Matthew Broker-Moffitt. I first met him as part of the picture book community on social media. Matthew and I became friends, I learned of his interesting life story, and enjoyed drooled over his food photography during the shutdown in 2020. His journey to publication is not only fascinating but a case study of someone who doesn’t give up on their dreams but made another dream come true along the way by combining his talent and expertise in cooking with his writing! I’m so proud to celebrate his debut, COLOR TASTE TEXTURE Recipes for Picky Easters, Those with Food Aversion & Anyone Who’s Ever Cringed at Food.
I know this book will have a wide audience and Matthew’s background as a classically trained chef who is also autistic has made him a perfect person to create this unique book.
Matthew is generously offering one lucky winner a copy of COLOR TASTE TEXTURE Recipes for Picky Eaters, Those with Food Aversion & Anyone Who’s Ever Cringed at Food. Comment on this blogpost to enter the giveaway. (US only.)

What were you like at the age of your target audience?
While Color Taste Texture is for all ages, it is especially for kids. I’ve included an old picture from when I was a kid, and if you can tell from it, I was a weirdo. I never knew what was acceptable, so I made a lot of jokes and was generally goofy in my own world.

What inspires you?
Nowadays what inspires me is just about any type of film or television (I watch so, so much), my dog Trinket, and the support I get from folks on social media excited for my cookbook.
What’s the one thing you hope readers take away from your book?
I think more than anything, it’s that Food Aversions are okay. It’s not a character defect or something that needs to be forced to change.

What’s next for you?
I’m working on two follow-up proposals for cookbooks to expand on concepts presented in COLOR TASTE TEXTURE, and also continuing to work on my kidlit with my fiction literary agent.

Thank you for reading and sharing your feelings about food. I totally agree. I haven’t made anything YET from Matthew’s cookbook which arrived Friday but I love the way he’s presented everything and categorized foods by their texture. I think about this but never broke it down the way he does in this book which is nothing short of brilliant for people dealing with picky eaters.
