Welcome Author Katie Frawley – Giveaway Alert

Today’s interview with author Katie Frawley, a wonderful critique partner who I met through a few online groups and mutual friends. She’s a judge for RateYourStory.org and her adorable picture book, TABITHA AND FRITZ TRADE PLACES, illustrated by Laurie Stansfield, released earlier this month. If you haven’t read it yet, go order it now. I’ll wait.

Okay, you’re back? Good because Katie is offering one lucky winner a Big Picture Critique for a picture book and all you have to do to enter is comment on this post.

What were you like at the age of your target audience?

My book is targeted for kids aged 4-8, so I’ll pick age 6 for my answer. When I was 6 I was in kindergarten. I was a little bit shy and self conscious. I remember being a Daisy in the Girl Scouts program and thinking I looked silly in my blue Daisy smock. I thought the other Daisies might laugh at me. (They didn’t!) On the first day of school, my best friend, Noelia Chavez, comforted me because I was so scared and nervous. They took our picture and put it in the newspaper. I loved gymnastics, my family, and my dog, Sorkin.

What inspires you?

Wonderful books inspire me! I’ve always been a big reader, but before I started writing, great books intimidated me. I’d think, I could never write a book like this! But once I decided to give writing a shot, I realized that I DO have deep wells of creativity in me. We ALL do! It was a very liberating discovery…and one I only made AFTER I started to write.

What’s something you hope readers take away from your book?

I want readers to to experience gratitude for the things they have. I want them to understand that envying others is a natural human impulse, but that practicing gratitude will bring them happiness and peace. After I read TABITHA AND FRITZ TRADE PLACES, to kids, I like to ask, “What’s something or someone in your home that you would miss if you went away?” It’s easy to ignore what’s right in front of us every day. I hope my book will help readers look at their surroundings with new eyes. (I also hope the book makes them giggle. It sure makes me giggle!)

What’s next for you?

I have another book under contract, but it hasn’t been announced yet. So no details to share. Boo! But I’m writing new manuscripts all the time, I have a few stories out on sub, I’m noodling a chapter book idea that really cracks me up, and I’m reading, reading, reading!

  1. I think we all wonder sometimes about what it would be like to trade places with someone else. I never thought about trading houses with an elephant, though! What a fun idea for a PB.

  2. I love how you made this story funny with such a heartfelt message. I used to keep a gratitude journal and now you reminded me to go back and fill it in every day. Looking forward to your next PB and oh that CB sounds so fun.

  4. If anything the pandemic has taught me is gratitude. I appreciate all the small things in life so much more and have started eliminating my stuff and greatly reducing my consuming of material possessions. I read and loved your book!
