I’m welcoming Jennifer Buchet to the blog today to share her inspiration and a few other things about her book, LITTLE MEDUSA’S HAIR DO-LEMMA (Clear Fork Publishing, May 2021) illustrated by Cassie Chancy. Jennifer was in my debut group when ALIANA REACHES FOR THE MOON, illustrated by Ariel Boroff from Eifrig Publishing released in 2019. If you aren’t a writer, you might not know the publishing world doesn’t always go according to plan, so Jennifer needed to muster all the patience in the world until her book came out earlier this year.
Jennifer is offering a critique (fiction picture book or a query letter) for the giveaway. Comment on this post to enter.

What were you like at the age of your target audience?
When I was writing “Little Medusa’s Hair Do-Lemma,” I envisioned sharing my story with children ages 3-6 yrs. I was a very shy child, who loved (and still does!) reading, animals, and playing lots of make-believe games. My favorite thing to do was walk in the woods with my father and play “Intrepid Explorer” where I battled baddies, discovered hidden cities, and always saved the fey-folk from impending peril! Today I still take those walks & share my woodland quests with my own daughter.

What inspires you?
So many different things can inspire a story for me, from the colors of an autumnal leaf, a favorite scent wafting by, or biting into an amazingly delicious food! My classroom of littles inspire me on a daily basis too, both with what they say and definitely with how they see and relate to their world.
What’s something you hope readers take away from your book?
My book debuted in May and I have been blessed with so many lovely comments, both from kids and their adults. So many readers have asked me when the next Little Medusa book is coming out! (Now that’s inspiring to say the least!) I’m hoping my readers will want to learn more about mythological figures as well as learn that with imagination and perseverance, anything is possible!

What’s next for you?
After an extremely busy & surprising summer, and the return to teaching in-person, time and energy have been in short supply! However, I’m now getting back on the writing wagon and revamping several picture book stories before the year is out. As the new year is set to unfold, I plan to finish the second story in my chapter book series and find the “write” literary agent for my work.
