Welcome Author Vicky Fang – Giveaway Alert

I’m excited to welcome author Vicky Fang today and share our interview. She is the author of board books, picture books, early readers, and early chapter books! So many wonderful books that you’re going to want to get your hands on! Today she’s here celebrating her latest book in the LAYLA AND THE BOTS series: LAYLA AND THE BOTS: MAKING WAVES! illustrated by Christine Nishiyama.

Vicky is offering one very lucky winner a signed copy of LAYLA AND THE BOTS: MAKING WAVES! Comment on this blogpost to enter the giveaway.

What were you like at the age of your target audience?

I was so shy but I somehow loved performing! I loved reading, dancing, art, cartoons, and theatre. I did some modeling for a local designer who happened to also be my pottery teacher. I did a million activities, like piano, viola, skiing, tennis, and gymnastics, but I wasn’t always happy about doing them! I was also pretty sure that I could make most of the things I saw in stores, so I would tell my family not to buy things because I would just make it for them.

What inspires you?

I get a lot of inspiration from my kids. I also get a lot of inspiration (and motivation!) from books, movies, and fellow kidlit writers. I also find that my inspiration comes in waves. Sometimes, I feel like I have no inspiration at all! But spending time with my kids, fellow writers, or books/movies usually gets me started again.

What’s something you hope readers take away from your books?

I hope readers see the creative possibilities of technology! I hope they see that girls of color can be rockstar engineers! Beyond that, I hope it sparks kids’ imagination so that they start to see all kinds of possibilities in their own world—for things they could invent and problems they could solve, with or without technology!

Look at all these inspiring books written by Vicky Fang!

What’s next for you?

I’m so excited about what’s to come. My next book, ALPHABOT (Candlewick/MIT Kids Press, 2023), is a novelty mix-and-match book that invites kids to create their own robot while learning about basic robotic terminology. After that, I have several unannounced book projects coming, from picture books to chapter books, so keep an eye out!

  1. For a while, I volunteered for an organization that taught coding to inner-city elementary school kids — I just wish the Layla books had been available then! The ability to see themselves as engineers and inventors is so vital. Thanks!

  2. Thank you for writing STEM books about girls and POC! Your next book ALPHABOTS also sounds interesting! I am an early elementary school educator and love learning about new series that will engage kids and encourage them to love reading. Also, I love your childhood pic that you shared!
