I'm a reading specialist and award winning educator from Chicago. While living in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado for nine years, I spent time hiking on the trails with my Goldendoodle Charlie and friends, writing, working in a literacy program at the Boulder Public Library, and mentoring writers and teachers. I love visiting schools. My books combine STEM and Kindness. "Aliana Reaches for the Moon" a picture book that draws inspiration from the moon and the curiosity of children, inviting children to be creative, explore, and experiment. "An Accidental Hero: A Mostly True Wombat Story" a picture book told in the form of a newscast which skillfully balances the serious subject of forest fires with compassion and humor to help children navigate this important topic through the real events of 2020. I moved to Northern New Jersey in 2025 and am working on new projects. View more posts
Great reflective picture, Laura.

Thanks! They were swimming when I first arrived. Then together they climbed up and stayed on that log for a long while cleaning themselves. There were turtles on a different log that I’d never seen before. It’s definitely spring here!

Thank you, Donna. I love catching them and their reflection in the same shot. I took some video too but I can’t share that on the blog for space reasons. I’ll probably share on my other socials.

Thanks, Rosi. They have been hanging around near this same spot for the past few months, maybe even all winter but yesterday they were so happy now that it has warmed up. Although I’m not sure how long that will last.

Thank you, Carol! I could have watched them for hours. This is adjacent to the middle and high schools in my new town and the high school students were walking by oblivious to them.

Perhaps they’re checking to see if they have any feathers out of place, LOL.

They were definitely cleaning themselves up and engaging in personal hygiene. I’m not familiar with bird behavior specifically, but it looked much like the way dogs and cats groom themselves.
