Lovely! I’m always in awe when you can only really see that sliver of light, but you can still see some of the details in the moon behind the shadow.

Thanks! I know, I think that’s even cooler than the full moon from a science standpoint. It shows how the moon never changes shape but the amount of light reflecting is what changes. #proudnerd

I’m not enough of a nerd to know if this is even possible (showing my ignorance here), but… this makes me wonder if anyone has played with the dark sky photography concept, but with the moon when it is full dark. I may have to go research.

New moon (when the moon isn’t visible because there is no reflection of light from the sun) would be hard to find/film in the sky. To the best of my knowledge you wouldn’t be able to do it but if you find out otherwise, PLEASE let me know! I love learning new things.

Okay, I did a little poking and it seems that because it is so dark you can’t see it enough to even try. Boo! I was hoping for something cool.

I’m sorry you were disappointed, but I’m glad to know what I had learned is still correct.
The days leading up to new moon, which is tonight, are the best chance to see the bright crescent with the shadow of the whole moon.

I really kind of knew this, I just also thought it would be possible, especially since you can get a camera to show so many more stars than your eyes can see when you do the dark sky photography. Live and learn!

Thanks! It’s a magical shot and happened by chance that I woke up and looked out at the right time!

Often of an early morning I’ll stand at the bus stop (waiting for a bus!) And gaze up at the moon, and I can honestly say I’ve never seen a crescent such as this. Spectacular!
